U.S. Lumber Coalition applauds trade enforcement, claims 30 billion board feet added since 2017

The U.S. Lumber Coalition has expressed strong support for President Trump’s enforcement of trade laws targeting "unfairly traded" Canadian lumber imports. Chairman Andrew Miller, also the CEO of Stimson Lumber, stated that duties imposed in 2017 under President Trump have allowed the domestic industry to regain its share of the U.S. market, reaching levels not seen since the 1970s.

Since 2016, U.S. mills have increased their capacity by 8 billion board feet, introducing new mills and expanding existing ones. This surge has resulted in the production of an additional 30 billion board feet of softwood lumber, equivalent to an annual average of 3.7 billion board feet. This additional output is sufficient to construct two million single-family homes. The coalition maintains that these measures have more than offset the decline in Canadian imports.

Miller emphasized the importance of sustaining the trade cases as long as Canada continues subsidizing and dumping lumber, asserting that U.S. trade law enforcement is critical for maximizing lumber production by U.S. workers. He also rejected calls for a "Canada First" trade approach, which he claimed would favor Canadian imports over domestic interests.

Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the U.S. Lumber Coalition, highlighted that duties have curtailed Canadian production, particularly during market downturns, reducing their impact on U.S. mills and workers. He concluded that strict enforcement of trade laws remains essential for further expanding U.S. lumber manufacturing and supporting housing construction across the country.
