Minister Ravi Parmar and California Building Industry Association stress need for B.C. lumber in rebuilding lost homes

British Columbia's Minister of Forests, Ravi Parmar, and California Building Industry Association CEO, Dan Dunmoyer, have issued a joint statement opposing U.S. tariffs on Canadian softwood, emphasizing their impact on housing costs and wildfire recovery. The leaders argue that tariffs on B.C. lumber will increase building costs at a time when California needs affordable housing, especially after the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, which destroyed more than 16,000 homes and buildings.
The statement highlights the long-standing economic ties between B.C. and California, emphasizing that fair trade policies benefit both regions. Parmar and Dunmoyer warn that additional duties on Canadian imports will worsen the existing softwood supply challenges and drive up housing prices. They stress that rebuilding after the devastating wildfires will require B.C. wood and that imposing tariffs will only make recovery slower and more expensive.
The leaders urge U.S. policymakers to recognize B.C.’s role in stabilizing the housing market and providing essential materials for reconstruction. They argue that strong trade relations between B.C. and California create jobs and economic stability, making cooperation the best path forward.
