Forest Service fires 3,400 employees, cutting workforce by 10%
The U.S. Forest Service is firing 3,400 employees, representing 10% of its 35,000-person workforce, following the expiration of the Trump administration’s "Fork in the Road" resignation program. The cuts affect probationary employees across multiple divisions, excluding wildland firefighters, according to Politico.
The layoffs impact workers involved in road and trail maintenance, timber production, watershed restoration, and wildfire prevention support. The agency stated that public safety positions remain a priority. A USDA spokesperson declined to comment on individual personnel actions but reaffirmed the department’s commitment to protecting communities and infrastructure.
Other federal agencies, including the Department of Energy and Small Business Administration, are also preparing similar workforce reductions. The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, backed by Elon Musk, is leading efforts to shrink government spending.
