Biden-Harris administration allocates $335 million to boost private forestland management and conservation
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the allocation of nearly $335 million in funding to enhance sustainable management and conservation of private forestlands, as part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda. This initiative, supported by the Inflation Reduction Act, emphasizes providing resources to private forest landowners, who manage over half of the U.S. forests, to ensure long-term ecological and economic benefits, according to the USDA on Dec. 11, 2024.
Of the total funding, $210 million has been awarded through competitive grants to state agencies, nonprofits, and for-profit entities. These funds aim to connect small landowners with climate markets, offer cost-share payment programs for sustainable practices, and issue payments for carbon sequestration efforts. Additionally, $125 million will be used to conserve 105,000 acres of forestlands in 10 states through the Forest Legacy Program. The initiative supports critical wildfire risk reduction measures, including hazardous fuel treatments and invasive species management.
This program complements $420 million allocated earlier in 2024 for conserving over 500,000 acres of forestlands.
