In 2024, Södra's research foundation has granted a total of SEK 12.5 million to 11 research projects aimed at advancing sustainable forestry and forest industry practices. The funding will pave the way for future forestry innovations, climate-smart products, sustainable production methods, and job creation.

The funded projects cover a broad range of forestry-related research. One initiative focuses on climate monitoring using radar-equipped scientific stations to observe forest health, emphasizing carbon dioxide and water dynamics in birch and pine forests. Another project explores fertilization on fertile forest land to boost forest growth, potentially benefiting forest owners and the forestry sector while enhancing carbon sequestration. A third study is working to maximize the use of sawn timber of varying qualities in structural applications, creating higher value and greater climate benefits. Additionally, a significant project on fossil-free forestry will evaluate alternatives to support an efficient and sustainable transformation of the forest value chain.

“Södra’s research foundation is a key component in a larger innovation system that supports research in forestry and the forest industry to promote the green transition. By investing in research, we lay the foundation for a sustainable future where forests contribute to climate solutions, economic development, and remain a vital societal resource,” said Henric Brage, Head of Innovation at Södra and a member of the foundation's board.

“We are delighted to support these projects and look forward to the knowledge and results they will yield. We also want to thank the researchers who submitted proposals but were not funded this time, and we encourage them to return with new and exciting research ideas,” added Brage.

Founded in 1995, Södra’s research foundation promotes research and development crucial to forestry and forest industry activities in southern Sweden. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded nearly 300 million kronor to approximately 250 projects.
