IKEA has completed a Euro 50 million transformation of its Soroksár store in Budapest, now the company’s largest fulfilment store in Europe and a pilot for a global hybrid retail model. The redesigned two-level store doubles its annual online order capacity to nearly one million while maintaining the full in-store product range.

For the first time, IKEA has merged its Market Hall and Showroom into a single customer-facing floor, reserving the second floor entirely for online fulfilment. This layout integrates automation, digital kiosks, and tested delivery solutions, including parcel and truck logistics, into one space, a first for Ingka Group, IKEA’s largest franchisee. These tools were previously deployed separately in different countries but never combined at a single location.

The new structure strengthens the store’s role as a national logistics hub, expanding delivery coverage beyond Budapest to all of Hungary. It also enhances the in-person shopping journey with a shorter, more interactive layout. Features include digital navigation via the IKEA app, post-purchase digital engagement, and augmented reality tools such as the Rug Projector that help customers visualize products.

By 2026, the Soroksár store is expected to become IKEA’s largest fulfilment store in the world, based on cubic meter volume and combined delivery capabilities. The reinvention supports IKEA’s omnichannel strategy by offering the full customer experience, including Swedish food and in-person expertise, while accelerating e-commerce logistics.

IKEA has also implemented large-scale training programs to upskill staff for the hybrid operation, increasing their availability for customer interaction while maximizing use of the new digital systems.

Olga Öncü, Ingka Group’s Retail Manager, described the store as a “template for many other stores going forward,” and emphasized the company’s goal of delivering affordable home furnishing both digitally and physically in more convenient ways.
